Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8
In human terms, it is hard to describe how close or far we find ourselves from God. The distance cannot be measured by our standards, emotions, or intellect. There is no technology available to measure our closeness. It can only be received and accepted through faith. One thing for sure, it is the by the merits of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that we are granted the opportunity to be close to a holy, loving, and forgiving God. His word tells us: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). In fact, it is God who initiates closeness and invites us to draw near to Him. He reveals himself to us by the splendor of his glorious creation and by the special message of salvation found only in the Sacred Scriptures. When God appeals to you, a beautiful journey is placed before you. It is not easy, it is narrow, and it is not comfortable at times. But it is a secured path where He promises not to leave us or forsake us. It is his special revelation which guides us and offers boundaries to keep us close.
As we anchor our faith in the Bible, our journey of discovery and closeness begins. His commands lead us to a productive life. Our faith depends on the Author, and our part is to respond to the love and kindness of his restorative message. The Bible describes explicitly how we can relate to our Abba Father. Closeness to God is a lifestyle to pursue every single day of our existence. The evidence of a close relationship to his Spirit will bring into fruition natural and supernatural happenings in our lives. The most wonderful transformation process occurs as we experience our close bonding with His grace.
In order to stay close, we must also know and be aware of what sinful unrepentant actions distance ourselves from God. As we want to please God, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to bring us to the conviction of wrongdoing. Worldliness is one of our major struggles. It offers the indulgence of pleasures and fleshly desires, but its consequences and personal pain are devastating to our closeness to his holiness. Besides denying the flesh and the world’s standards, we are also commanded to submit to God and resist the devil. Temptation to fracture our relationship with God is real. Once it comes knocking on our door, we must learn not to answer.
Undoubtedly, as we get close to God the benefits are overwhelming. Closeness breaks the barrier of fear. Closeness brings eternal destiny and purpose in our lives. The fruit of the Spirit is common evidence of our closeness. It empowers our dreams and hopes. It is his love that will keep us close, for nothing can separate us from the love of God. Whatever you do, run to Him because He is out to embrace you as his child.
